How to Contribute?

In our first forty years, nearly 150,000 retreatants and a half million visitors have shared our contemplative spirituality. For many, New Camaldoli has become a spiritual oasis in their life journey, a place they return to for spiritual nourishment. The enthusiastic public response to our ministry has recently been reported in the Chicago Tribune, US News and World Report, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

Economic self-sufficiency is the Camaldolese ideal and, although we recommend that our guests contribute only $60 per day for food and lodging, we are gratified that our labors generate enough revenue to meet our daily needs.

Unfortunately, the costs of maintaining a spiritual facility on the California coastline have escalated in recent years, in part due to natural disasters of water and fire, in part due to the realities of 21st century economics. Facility renovation becomes more expensive. Government regulations and licensing requirements require that work formerly done by monks be carried out by outside contractors. Facilities open to the public must meet strict federal and state standards.

For these reasons we have found that we must turn to philanthropic sources to meet the needs of sustaining our ministry and to fulfill our hopes and dreams for expanding it.

We invite you to come and spend a day or two with us. See for yourself how our community serves the public. Spend some time, a few hours, even a few minutes, listening to the silence ... listening to your heart.

We believe that any individual can learn much from the silence. Indeed, one of our audio tapes available in the bookstore is entitled, "Finding God In the Silence."

There are fewer and fewer opportunities for silence and reflective solitude in modern American life. 'We feel that our ministry, though quiet, is necessary and of great value to the spiritual development of our retreatants and visitors.

We invite those who share our commitment to contemplative spirituality to support our efforts to maintain this place of sanctuary and solitude.
